Book Anita (Four Point Universe Book 1) Review :

Great plot and awesome characters! Absolutely loved Anita and Marita! Was worried that there wouldn't be much interaction between A and M seeing as the book was dealing with so much (if the romance factor isn't there in spades I tend to get bored of the book) but was greatly surprised and absolutely fell in love with the quality interaction between Anita and Marita...understanding, compassion, heat, combustible intimate moments that, where you feel the both of them even if the story is a first person!Brings me to my next point, I dislike first person narrative but Ellendale's writing just immerses you into each character in such a way that you understand each character in their own right. There are no hidden motives or chance of misunderstanding characters...they're all just open to you as a reader. Very cleverly done, author! In certain scenes, I did have some problems understanding where and how Marita and Anita were sitting or embracing...had to read scenes a few times to grasp and image that worked according to what was written...but that's just something I need straightened in my mind before moving forward. No reason others would have the same issue.A book that deals with serious issues in a respectful manner. It has depth, humanness, VERY crass humour, and heart-poundingly sensual moments of intimacy and love.
Max Ellendale's latest, "Anita," a 3rd tie-in to her critically-acclaimed "Four Point" (FP) trilogy (one of me favourites lesfic trilogies), was another brilliantly written story that left me spellbound! If you've read all 3 books from the FP trilogy, you'd know who Anita was. This book, essentially, if you ask me, is the 4th book of FP because all the characters featured in the FP trilogy made appearances in this book (which was such a delight to welcome them back! Ta, Ellendale!). That's because Anita's character literally touched the lives of all the characters, even though, the trilogy didn't elaborate on her character and story other than being the resident psychiatrist for the characters and related cases."Anita" was what I was waiting for. I was intrigued by Anita, the mysterious, enigmatic psychiatrist since Book 1 and increasingly so as her role expanded to include other characters besides Sali, the main character in the FP trilogy. For me, I've always been curious to find out just how therapists like Anita, deal with the effects of listening, getting involved, being immersed in the psychological journey, specifically the dark facets of the mind of their patients/clients, like trauma, grief. In other words, therapists heal and treat other people's minds. Who heals theirs? For this reason, I was really curious about how Anita dealt with all the dark, intense events that she was a part of for so many years via Sali, Jenny, Nora (and Mags, albeit in a much more demure effort)'s traumatic journeys. Surely she would be affected psychologically and emotionally because, really, there's only so much a human being can take, no matter how much of an expert and professional a therapist can take in the long run without any release, which Anita was clearly in that position. Ellendale (bless her!) then decided to finally give us the story of Anita! And did she delve into this incredible character, psychologically, emotionally, physically and spiritually, indeed, with perfection, to say the least! The book began with the scene at end of Book 3 "Mirror," when Sali was ready to leave the hospital, with Mags waiting at the exit. Only this time, it was from Anita's point-of-view. I thought that was a brilliant way to start off Anita's journey after she was finally able to discharge her patient, Sali, whose ordeal had taken up so much time and energy from her for so many years. Perfect tie-in with a flowing continuity that kicked off the rest of the book and Anita's journey.I absolutely adored and loved Anita! I wanted to just hug her, give her comfort! For so long, she was the healer. She was there for those who needed her. She provided safety, security, and comfort for those around her - Sali, Nora, Mags, and the rest of the gang. But she was alone when it came to her own needs. Something which she herself wasn't even aware of or rather, blocked out of her mind so she didn't have to deal. How she behaved mentally and emotionally truly resonated in me, thanks to Ellendale's masterful, vivid description of Anita's innermost psyche. She was the type of person who would deny her own feelings, needs and desires for fear of showing weakness if she showed any emotions or signs of breaking down. She had been holding it in for so long that it was an automatic psychological response for her.I applaud Ellendale for being so open to describing in detail Anita's psychological struggle and dilemma - the after-effects of her treating such deep-seated traumatic events that plagued her psyche, how it had increased her fear of intimacy, fear of loss as a result of giving in to love. The fact that she believed she wasn't deserving of loving and being loved, finding happiness in her life because of all the darkness she had been immersed in for so long that she only deserved to be alone for fear of losing or ruin someone's life if she dared to open her heart and soul, letting someone into her life. As such, she preferred to live vicariously through Sali/Mags and Nora/Caroline's love and relationships by watching them whenever she was around them...borderline on voyeuristic, really. I reckon therapists' job is to observe people's behaviour, body language, communicative acts because it's an inherent skill that's necessary to understand human behaviour, hence knowing how to treat them. So it was natural for Anita to observe her friends especially when she'd rather get her fix - a sense of comfort, joy and satisfaction - from observing how they behaved toward each other in their relationships, particularly intimacy, instead of stepping out of her self-imposed prison, exiled from love, passion, desire, intimacy, happiness in her life.In essence, she chose solitude. The flashbacks of the significant events occurring with Sali in the past 8 years as Anita's plight progressed to different levels in her life, were positively affective. I was enamoured of her experience. All her visions of deaths, morbid thoughts from her professional experience all contributed to her anxiety. She had seen so much darkness that she was afraid that the light was too fragile to hope for in her life and hold on to. Hence, true to her type A personality (alpha), a control freak, essentially, Anita always felt the need to always stay "ON" all the time, unwilling to switch off her professional button, so to speak, always in crisis management mode, almost like a defence mechanism, because she could then be in control when she was in that mode, instead of losing it to anything remotely related to her feelings, emotions, sense of belonging, to a point where she even pushed her what few friends she had away when things got a little too personal, a mode that she knew she couldn't control! As a result of her prolonged solitary attitude, removed from anything remotely personal, she could never feel like she belonged despite her friends' continuous efforts, being invited to gatherings with those who cared about her - Sali, Nora, Mags, Caroline, Harper et al.But no matter how much she tried to push away her feelings, she was inevitably tethered to those around her, especially Sali and Nora. One memorably heartbreaking moment of the book was when Anita, post-Sali, couldn't help but took in another patient because she reminded her so much of Sali. It was like she got addicted to treating severe trauma-induced psychosis after being Sali's psychiatrist for so long, she couldn't but feed the hunger that'd been her coping mechanism, suppressing what her body, mind and soul really desired. The whole ordeal finally broke her down, which incidentally was the beginning of the end of her closely guarded, locked and keyed door into her heart and soul.My absolute favourite thing to uncover about Anita's multi-layered journey of self-discovery was definitely about WHO changed her life, from being a consummate observer to an actual participant of life itself - turning OFF the "professional" button and turning ON the "human" one, finally! Ellendale's utter commanding skill of writing dialogue and body language that oozed emotions, desire, passion, eroticism and sensuality, their increasing depth of their intimacy was so intoxicating I was literally spellbound! Their slow-burn romance was so addictively seductive, raw, and erotic. I was hooked. Their chemistry was literally on fire from the get-go! I couldn't get enough of them! Just wait until you find out who it was and how they came about, their long journey toward the end. All I can divulge is that you will not be disappointed, you will feel utterly captivated, downright mesmerised. Fate knocked on their door at one time. Destiny appeared before them when the time was right.Don't know about you but I'm a total believer in serendipity, fate and destiny. In other words, I believe that when two people are meant to be - fated AND destined to be in love and together - absolutely nothing, including time and place can ever sever that cord of destiny. This was clearly evident, as Ellendale so deftly crafted and weaved, in Anita's ultimate journey of life worth living. She finally achieved peace and tranquility within herself when she felt ready to let go and let in the pure, unadulterated love laced with friendship, safety and security, passion/desire, comfort in physical intimacy as well as emotional. To be able to finally open her heart and soul to love and be loved. AND...Anita became someone's pixie! Awww.....how that came about was just plain adorable! That alone is deserving of multiple revisits to Anita's love life, not to mention the entire love story all together!Another perfect moment in this book that Ellendale gifted me, as a huge fan of the FP trilogy, was - RESOLUTION. Closure of several unfinished business stemmed from the FP trilogy: The closure of Sali and Nora's ongoing recovery from their deepest psychological trauma - Sali and the bridge; Nora and water. And then, the closure of Anita and Sali's seemingly endless doctor/patient relationship that finally met its demise. A huge relief to both that they could finally be honest-to-goodness friends. Oh, you simply must read how Sali dealt with Anita during and after the transition! Hilarious! And finally the closure of Anita and her relationship to the entire gang of people who'd loved and cared about her throughout her journey - finally accepting being welcomed into the fold otherwise called FAMILY consisting of Sali and the whole gang! So, thank you, Ellendale, for giving these beloved cast of characters from the FP trilogy a proper closure so we can all cherish these characters forever now that they can move on with the rest of their lives filled with love, joy and contentment, within the recesses of our imagination! Oh, what a perfect end to a perfect FP universe!!A perfect end to Anita's journey was properly summed up with Jenny's quote:"Live, Anita. Live."Oh, one more thing: THE LIST. Oh.....the list!!! Wow!! What a memorable list indeed! One of a kind. Never seen anything like it! Yes, it relates to our little petite pixie!!All in all (if you haven't figured out already from me aforementioned long-winded analysis of this fan-bloody-tastic book), "Anita," it is a RESOUNDING MUST-READ. To sum up, this story is: Mind-bogglingly intoxicating. Breathtakingly sensual. Emotionally resonating. Deeply personal. Superbly written. Definitely one of me favourite lesfic books! Anita, obviously, is one of me all-time favourite lesfic character!READ IT. PONDER IT. FEEL IT. REPEAT.Bloody well done, Ms. Ellendale, and thank YOU for giving us this magnificent piece of psychological story of about letting go and opening up to love and being loved, living a happy life with your soul mate, free of guilt, fear, and darkness, along with friends who are your family.
